Shorter Days, Shedding

August23, 2023

Late summer changes & challenges.

For those of you who stuck with my long email last week - thank you! This week's will be much shorter, I promise. 😁

The days are also getting shorter, and, in contrast to the spring shedding season which heralds warmer weather, late summer's shed is a whole different feeling.

Having grown up in CT, fall was not my favorite time of year, because it ushered in a long, cold, and dark winter. Not Alaska-strength long, cold, and dark, but dark enough for my solar-powered brain and body to consider hibernation a good life choice.

In September, I started counting the days to December 22 - not because it's close to Christmas, but because it's the day after the Winter Solstice, which meant the daylight hours would start to lengthen. From December 21 on, I was a huge fan of the Farmer's Almanac because I could see how many seconds of daylight we gained every day.

On the flip side, August can be particularly challenging - the days are definitely shorter, but you haven't reached the fall Equinox yet, so you know the daylight is on a downward slide for another 4 months...

I've struggled with depression all of my adult life, and it starts to push itself forward around this time of year. Mostly due to the shorter daylight, but also due to the history I have with winter and running a large boarding and training barn.

Consider this equation: 2 water buckets (per horse) x 5 gallons / 10 degrees x 42 horses... let's just say getting 4-gallon ice cubes from 84 five-gallon buckets when it's 10 degrees requires a certain (hard-earned) skillset. Tip #1 - Always use a RUBBER mallet...

Here in Virginia, winter is kinder. We rarely have a hard freeze (although the 6° temps we had on Christmas last year were certainly unpleasant, and an unneeded reminder of why we no longer live in CT...)

So, I continue to work on lessening that winter dread, keep that rubber curry going on Laddie and Bella daily, watch all the hair coming off, and knowing that, even if it's 6° on Christmas again, winter isn't the marathon here like it was in CT... more like a 5K.

What's your favorite season with your horses, and why? Hit reply and let me know!

Until next time!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I'm sorry this email is arriving to you a day late - add tech gremlins and a migraine to a holiday week and it just throws everything off! Last week's rain and warmer temperatures deserted us yesterday in favor of some light snow,❄️ wind, and high temps in the 40s. It. Was. Not. Pleasant! I guess considering it's nearly the end of November, I can't really complain! I'm having a great time writing weekly posts for Aging Horsewomen International over on Facebook. The longer versions are on my blog, as usual. Information about my new course and how to become a beta tester will be in next week's newsletter - you'll be able to take...

July 27, 2023 A quick overview of the podcast so far... TLDR: Check out the links to listen or watch the episodes. Just about two weeks ago I launched my podcast for horsewomen: Find Yourself, on a Horse. It’s been a fun, exciting, (and somewhat scary) experience! It’s really taking me out of my comfort zone. I’m good at helping women develop a toolkit to solve challenges with their horses. I taught “live” for decades, and I’m now coaching and running courses online - but for some reason,...
